For fans, teams and racers of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, off-road racing’s history is rich with very unique personalities that have taken on the sport’s dusty challenge. A key element of 40 Years to Glory will be in honoring the largest gathering of the sport’s greatest stars ever. From the pioneers to the cross-over superstars to today’s brightest talents, 40 Years to Glory will bring them all together for one unforgettable evening.
Here are just some of sport’s heroes that are scheduled to be in Long Beach for 40 Years to Glory:
SAL FISH
Known as the Godfather of the Baja 1000, SCORE’s Sal Fish has been the man behind the sport for more than three decades. Sal has recently earned Lifetime Achievement awards at the Off-Road Impact Show and the Xtremey Awards, as well as being inducted into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006
BRUCE MEYERS
The inventor of the fiberglass dune buggy, in 1967 Bruce Meyers also set the first four wheel record in Baja with the late Ted Mangels driving his “Old Red” Meyers Manx. It was Meyer’s fun and affordable creation that opened the sport to the mainstream.
WALKER EVANS
One of the sport’s true superstars, Walker “the Legend” Evans started his remarkable off-road racing career in the late 1960s. A Dodge factory racer for decades, Evans won numerous desert and short course championships, as well as claiming the first overall win for a truck in Baja.
MALCOLM SMITH
A true off-road icon, Malcolm Smith has won in Baja on both two wheels and four. The star of Bruce Brown’s epic film On Any Sunday, Malcolm is also famous for his charity work for Baja’s orphaned children.
DRINO MILLER
A truly innovative pioneer in the sport, Drino Miller was a key figure in the VW-powered dune buggy movement that is still alive today. The overall winner of the Baja 1000 in 1970, Miller also worked at Toyota Racing Development during Toyota’s factory racing programs.
ROBERTO GUERRERO
One of the first of the recent wave of cross-over drivers migrating to the Baja 1000, this former Formula One and Indy car star first took to the dirt at the now legendary Baja 2000. Since then Roberto has continued to race and guide tours of the peninsula with Wide Open Baja.
VIC WILSON
One of the first Baja racers, Vic Wilson has the distinction of winning the inaugural Mexican 1000 in 1967 teamed with the late Ted Mangels. Vic backed that overall victory up in 1970 teamed with Drino Miller in the innovative Dune Buggies magazine-backed single seater.
ROD HALL
The ageless Rod Hall has the distinction of being the only four-wheel racer to have competed in every Baja 1000 ever held. Still racing on a regular basis as part of Team Hummer, Rod is also renown for his efforts on behalf of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.
CAMERON STEELE
Now a famous television personality in the worlds of extreme sports, freestyle motocross and Champ Car, Cameron Steele has been a winning off-road racer for most of his life. Now campaigning in the sport’s marquee Trophy-Truck division, Cameron was named SCORE’s Person of the Year in 2006.
DON ADAMS
Known best for his exploits racing a variety of Jeeps, Colorado’s Don Adams is also notable for winning two different four wheel classes in the 1982 Baja 1000. Don recently was inducted into the Baja Legacy Hall of Fame at Ensenada’s Horsepower Ranch.
